Glass Steagall Act

Retail banking is essentially concerned with consumer banking. Due to the eradication of the Glass-Steagall Act in the last 1990's, many banks now operate investment and retail banking arms (in addition to private banking, corporate banking and asset management). During the last five years, retail banking has faced many challenges and has had to bear lower returns that other banking segments. Retail banks are under heavy pressure to increase current profitability, return on equity and at the same time demonstrate some capability for continued growth.

Glass-Steagall Act - Two separate laws are known as the Glass-Steagall Act. The first, enacted February 27 1932 by President Herbert Hoover took the United States off the gold standard and greatly increased the ability of the Federal Reserve to influence the money supply.

Henry B. Steagall - Henry Bascom Steagall (1873-1943) was a United States Representative from Alabama. He lent his name to the Glass-Steagall Act.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation - The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is an independent federal agency created by the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. The vast number of bank failures in the Great Depression spurred the United States Congress into creating an institution which would guarantee banks, inspired by the success the Commonwealth of Massachusetts experienced with Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF).
